Kamala Harris Becomes Presumptive Nominee After Biden Withdraws

Chris Coons, a close confidant of Biden, spoke to CBS News after the announcement

Biden's decision leaves the Democratic Party in a state of uncertainty

WASHINGTON - President Biden announced Sunday that he will step aside as the Democratic presidential nominee.

The president's decision plunges the Democratic Party into an unprecedented state of uncertainty, just months before the general election. Biden's withdrawal leaves Vice President Kamala Harris as the presumptive nominee, but she is not guaranteed to become the new standard-bearer for the party.

Delaware Sen. Chris Coons, a close confidant of Biden and the co-chair of the Biden-Harris campaign, spoke to CBS News after the announcement.

"This is a difficult day for the Democratic Party," Coons said. "But we have a strong candidate in Vice President Harris, and I am confident that she will be able to unite the party and win in November."
