President Held Rare Event to Mark First Anniversary

Democrats Praise Biden for Dropping Out of 2024 Race

WASHINGTON, Jan. 20, 2023 (CNN) - President Joe Biden faced a test Thursday that he had avoided so far this year: a solo news conference with questions from the White House press. The event marked Biden's one-year anniversary in office and was seen as an opportunity for him to address a number of pressing issues, including the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the economy, and the war in Ukraine.

In his opening remarks, Biden said he believes Russian President Vladimir Putin will "move in" on Ukraine in the coming days. He also addressed the rising inflation rate in the United States, saying that he is "doing everything I can" to bring it down.

During the question-and-answer session, Biden was pressed on a number of issues, including the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Afghanistan and the ongoing negotiations with Iran over its nuclear program. He also faced questions about his own approval ratings, which have been declining in recent months.

Despite the challenges he faces, Biden struck an upbeat tone throughout the news conference. He said that he is "optimistic about the future of this country" and that he is "determined to make a difference."

Democrats praised Biden for his performance at the news conference, saying that he showed "strength and leadership" in the face of difficult questions. Republicans were more critical, saying that Biden "failed to answer" many of the questions he was asked and that he "seemed out of touch" with the concerns of the American people.
